Environmental Academy students joined Staff from Palm Beach County Environmental Resource Management to learn about conducting Seagrass surveys in the southern end of the Indian River Lagoon. The experience included looking at water chemistry such as salinity, ph, dissolved oxygen and temperature. Students were able to explore above and below the water to discover the three major seagrass species found in Florida, along with invertebrates like blue crabs and conks. Using 1 meter square quadrats students were able to practice assessing seagrass density at several depths. This is an important activity as Florida’s seagrass habitats are experiencing declines throughout the state. Thanks to ERM staff, Mayra Ashton, Beth Orlando, and Samantha Corr for joining us out in the field
