Support the Academy

Unfortunately, the School District is not able to fund the kinds of field experiences, equipment and materials that are needed for the hands-on education taught by the Academy. The Friends work to help make up that deficit by providing funds to help fulfill the program’s needs on an annual basis. Our organization is reliant on fundraising events, and donations to make this happen.

Categories of Support:

Although needs vary from year to year, the program relies on donations for the following categories:

Field Studies (Field Trips): 

Providing transportation is the most costly component of the program. In addition, funds are also needed for meals and admission fees.

Field Equipment: 

Collecting data in the field requires everything from simple transect lines, a variety of digital probes, and even snorkel gear. These tools allow students to not only explore nature, but also evaluate the health of ecosystems and come up with innovative solutions to problems. 

Laboratory Equipment:

Providing students with a growing inventory of equipment to enable a variety of experimental investigations. This includes simple laboratory glassware, digital balances, and drying ovens.

Garden Supplies:

From growing vegetables and native plants, to conducting experiments, our garden provides many ways for students to become engaged and learn.

Teaching Zoo and Aquariums:  

Our students take care of a variety of organisms within the Academy. This includes abandoned pets such as snakes, and marine aquariums. Students learn about animal husbandry, monitor the chemistry of aquarium water, and teach the public about these organisms during outreach events.  

The Nicholas Megrath Scholarship Dinner and Awards Cereomony:

The Annual Nicholas Megrath Scholarship Dinner & Awards Ceremony is our primary fundraising event each spring. All profits from this event go directly to the Academy in order to support all of its activities and functions.
